Makhaya Ntini is a former right arm fast-medium bowler for the South African Cricket Team. He was the first black African cricketer to represent South Africa. In 2002 he took 50 One Day International wickets.He was voted most popular sportsperson in South Africa by the BMI Sportrack study in 2005.
Ntini retired from international cricket on 9 January 2011 at the Twenty20 international vs India. Ntini was honoured for his ongoing contribution to cricket.
He currently plays for the Mercedes Warriors in the Eastern Cape.
He was the first ethnically black player to play for the South African team in 1998.
In 2007 he ranked 2nd on the ICC World Bowlers’ ranking.
He became the first South African Bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test match at Lords (10 for 220) in the second Test against England.
Ntini, a product of the United Cricket Board’s development programme, was the leading wicket taker with 14 wickets in the NatWest One Day International series in England.
He escalated in popularity and was voted most popular sportsperson in South Africa by the BMI 2005 Sportrack study.
In 2002 he took 50 One Day International wickets.
He concluded the 2003 season as the leading wicket taker in Test cricket, having taken 59 wickets in 12 Tests. He also took 45 One Day International wickets in the same year.
